What is the difference between a personal trainer and an exercise physiologist? The difference is in the substance.
Personal Training courses are of varying standards. Courses may last anywhere from 9 weeks to 18 months. Personal trainers are taught basic training methodology that applies to a specific population. The entry standards are unfortunately low; the pass requirements are based on attendance.
Why is this important?
Training is a simple discipline. People, however, are complex. People have a plethora of needs when it comes to physical fitness. Most people have risks, concerns, constraints, conditions or tough objectives. A personal trainer is not taught how to adequately deal with these issues. Our society today through lifestyle and other demands complicates our physical well being which makes specialist advice more and more important. With the population suffering from the complications of inactivity, injury and illness Exercise Physiologists hold the in depth knowledge of the complexities of the human body to help overcome some of the most challenging of cases. Exercise Physiologists understand the health system and work closely with physiotherapists, dietitians and psychologists assisting the population with exercise related health concerns.
Exercise Science is an allied health discipline. It is a degree at most universities that consists of biomechanics, biochemistry, exercise physiology, human movements, behavioral analysis, exercise and nutrition, social and political implications of exercise to name a few. The degree programs usually cover 4 years and involve practical work in hospitals and clinics.
So what’ the difference between Personal Training and Exercise Science? Substance.
